You arrive into this historic town and you immediately understand why so many people are captivated by it. The heritage listed old town is beautiful although very touristy and is shocking for harrassment on the street by vendors. Every shop in the old town is a tourist shop, clothes, shoes, bags, carving, t-shirts EVERYTHING!
I spent my first day here looking at historic sights, I was staying in a dorm room with 5 other single travelers - it was cool as we all went out for dinner and drinks and met up with one of the guys tailors who was a local Vietnamese girl so we pryed her with questions about the local culture and customs and exactly what she thinks of Vietnamese men - classic!
Hoi An has a very reputible cooking school called Red Bridge so I enrolled myself in the half day cooking class which I must say was exceptionally well organised and very professional. The group was taken on a tour of the local markets before heading off down stream to the restaurant and a tour of the herb garden before we started cooking. I learnt to make a number of Vietnamese favourites including the rice paper to make rice paper rolls - so look out when I get home I will be cooking up a storm. I ate all morning and the food was so quick to make, light, easy and healthy as well as delicious!
While in Hoi An I also had my custom made clothes made and I must say I went a little over board but I am really happy with everything I bought apart from the fact that I dont want to spoil any of the clothes on my travels so I think I will be sending them home.
Day three entailed a trip out to My son which is a beautful Cham temple complex 55kms outside of Hoi An. The tour companies are so cheap here, although I would prefer to do the trip by myself it is so much easier and cheaper to do it with a tour you just need to be prepared for the constant selling at every opportunity.
